I thought the altarpiece from Gruenewald was very nice. Still today in European Catholic churches a piece like this is used. During the week it will be closed and one can only see the crucifixion of Christ. The left and the right wings can be opened and behind it is a cabinet with wine and bread. On the right side of Gruenewald’s piece is the Healer, for in the bible it says “by his stripes we are healed.” On Sundays the church members celebrate the resurrection of Christ and the middle part will fold open and it shows how Christ rises up, and goes back to heaven to his father. It is a painting, and still a piece that functions, opens, and changes. He uses lots of red colors which also resembles the blood of Christ that he gave for us, so we can live. The facial expressions are very intense too.
The Unicorn in Capitivity is the culmination of a series of images describing the hunt for and death of the unicorn, the mythical one-horned equine who could ony be captured by a virgin. In this of seven tapestries the unicorn is hunted, killed, and is then resurrected. The theme depicts the courtly pasttime of hunting, but the unicorn itself has been read as sybolizing Christ and a secular bridgeroom.
The Burial of Count Orgaz by El Greco’s in the Church of Santo Tome in Toledo was one of El Greco’s most impressive commissions. It emphasizes the Roman Catholic belief that good work is required to achieve salvation. El Greco makes this art piece look contemporary by portraying the local nobility and clergy of his time among the attendants of the burial. He also reflects his Venetian training through his display of color and texture in the armor. The upper half of the art is painted very differently than the lower half.
The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse show the viewers a frighting visualization of the text of the book of Revelation. This piece show the images of War, Fire, Gamine, and Death overrunning the population of the Earth. By this I can see that the church was still a big part and religious pieces had and still has a big part of history.
The Burial of Count Orgaz by El Greco’s was by far my favorite peice. I like how it leads you eye from the Count and his burial all the way up to the heavens while telling a story of how living a good life will bring you to heaven. I also like how the artist's son was incorporated in the painting by way of staring at the audience and pointing to the event and thereby guiding the viewers eyes throughout the painting.
Bruegel's "Peasant Wedding", distinguish's Bruegel, from his Contemporaries of the time. His willingness to focus so much attention on peasents, shows his desire to make great art, no matter where he has to go to find it. the bride is clearly the most important person, she is not quite int he center yet, she is distinguished from every one else. Bruegel puts alot of attention on the food, showing that do the food is not first class, that does not matter to the average peasent, it's first class to them. Many of the people have their heads turned, to show how involved and entertained they are with the wedding. The simplicity which Bruegel uses is what makes it so fascinating, to all people of the time, peasants and rich alike.
Adam and Eve is a amazing monochrome image created by Durer using a mixture of biblical subject with greek character such as Apollo and Venus.Durer used this painting to express the perfect proportions using as a reference Vitruvius.According to the medieval theory we have humors that are part of our bodily fluids, and all the characters in this image such as the cat or the rabbit represent symbolic meanings as choleric humor or energetic and sensual humor.
I was intrigued by Greco's Burial for Count Orgaz. His large scale enabled you to view the burial for the Count at eye level however, when you looked up towards Jesus and the angel who carried the Count's soul, it was as if you were looking up into the heavens. Greco set the painting in his time though the actual burrial took place a couple hundred years prior.
I've always liked the Four Horsemen by Durer best, but Adam and Eve is similar in context. There is so much detail considering that it was done by carving. It is almost comical the way that the characters are positioned. Adam is stepping on the tail of the rat, while Eve feeds the snake.
